The 19th it was my 29th birthday!

Whereas last year I was near the Himalayas eating chocolate Momo’s (mmmm!) and having my friend Scott from Scotland sing the happy birthday tune in our pizzeria guest house while walking up to me with a lit candle I subsequently blew out – this year was entirely different.

This year I spent the 19th in Red Hook cooking food from a Jerusalem cookbook, and my lovely aunt and uncle threw me a bash at the Arts Club in Manhattan the following Tuesday. Above is the amazing invite! We had cocktails and I wore a 50’s dress.

Needless to say I changed from 28 to 29 in style.

why try: dry skin brushing


Earlier I wrote about the Oil Pulling Method, which is part of the Ayurvedic tradition, today I want to share Dry Skin Brushing, which is also part of Ayurveda.

Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and I find it thus deserves some love and attention. With dry skin brushing we stimulate the lymphathic vessels and the lymph nodes.

The lymph nodes are small bean-shaped nodes in our body, they are linked by the lymphatic vessels. Lymph nodes filter or trap viruses, cancer cells, bacteria, and other unwanted substances. They do pretty wonderful work for your health!

When we brush our skin with a dry brush, we are stimulating these lymph vessels and thus engaging the excretion of unwanted substances towards the lymph nodes.

The benefits of Dry Skin Brushing:

  • Removes dead skin cells
  • Stimulates blood flow and lymph flow
  • Detoxifies the skin
  • Reduces cellulite
  • Stimulates the hormones and oil glands
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Helps digestion
  • Stimulates the nervous system
  • Tones muscles
  • Tightens the skin

The only utensil you need is the brush, and you should only use one that is made with all natural bristles. This gentle brushing of the skin stimulates the lymphatic system, which I think is the most important benefit from the above list, because this system is of vital importance to our health.

Step 1. Legs

1. Start out with either the right or the left leg.
2. Begin with the bottom of your feet, which you brush in small circular motions.
3. Then you brush in either small or longer strokes upward from the tops of your feet towards your knees.
4. Brush the knees in circular motion.
5. Then brush the upper legs towards the inside of your thighs and hips.
6. Brush your bottom by brushing from under your cheeks towards your lower back.
7. Repeat all steps with the other leg.

Step 2. Front torso

1. Brush with small strokes from your hips and pelvic region, and from below your breasts and sides towards your navel center.
2. In a slow and large circular motion brush around your navel all across your belly.
3. Brush under and above your chest (breasts) towards your armpits.
4. Brush from behind your neck, along your jawline, then down your neck towards your collarbone in a couple of streaks along each side. As though you’re writing an S from the back of your neck to your collar bone.

Step 3. Back torso

1. Brush your lower back softly with upward motion in multiple streaks.
2. Your upper back should be brushed softly in a downward motion towards the center of your back.

Step 4. Arms

1. Start out with one arm.
2. Brush down all of your fingertips.
3. In a slow circular motion brush your hand-palms.
4. Brush along the back of your fingers and back of palms towards wrist.
5. Your lower arms should be brushed from your wrist towards your elbow.
6. Brush your elbow in circular motion.
7. Then brush from your elbow towards your shoulder and arm pit.
8. The armpits should be brushed softly in a slow circular motion.
9. Repeat with the other arm.

There are a few different ways you can do this brushing, but this is how I like to do it. You can do it for as long as you like, but I like to brush for about 5-15 minutes per time. Try and keep it in your shower routine by making it a habit, it’s best to do this as often as possible. It’s important to shower afterwards so that you wash off any toxins and/or dead skin cells that have surfaced due to the brushing.

My experience is that this keeps skin so soft and healthy, and the feeling that you’re activating your very important lymph nodes and vessels makes me feel as though I have massaged my body and my mind.

After showering with warm water I like to follow it up with a blast of 30 seconds with ice-cold water. This is also great for your skin and lymph nodes. After showering I like to massage some coconut oil on my skin which is antibacterial and deeply hydrating.

As y’all know, I’m in Red Hook, Brooklyn right now. I’m staying with my aunt Victoria and Uncle Darren. This Sunday we had lovely girly brunch at their home with our friends Andrea and Lauren, as well as a Sunday brunch essential: champagne. After brunch we went for a long walk around the Red Hook nabe, and here follows some of what we saw.

I found this pack of tarot cards lying around, and just couldn’t help myself figuring out how to do it.

There are two ways that I used it: one was by just grabbing a card, and the other time with a question. I must say I grabbed a couple of good ones.

The first card I picked from the row of tarot cards was the card with number eight, which turns out to be the card of strength! This is a great card to pick at any time. What does the card of strength mean?

Card No. 8 Strength

Focus on what you want, instead of what you don’t want. Allow yourself spiritual time, especially time alone to meditate. Don’t allow yourself to think fearful or worrisome thoughts.

Within your career, it’s time to be assertive and ask for what you want and need in order to move up the ladder. If you’re looking for work, then you should be confident in yourself, because you have the skill-set to find the work you want to do. There are more options than you would think possible.

Love should be going smoothly, if in a relationship. Otherwise it’s a great time to get out and mingle, since you’re in a confident phase and you’re in a phase that you’re likely to meet someone.

You should be careful with your money and save it. You have enough to be comfortable now, but even if you have just a little money, try and save. There is the possibility of buying a home soon.

At the moment you are in vital health, but try and improve this by exercising and eating healthful foods.

It’s a spiritual time for you right now, just try and focus on all three of the aspects of your being: mind, body and spirit. Do your utmost to align the three.

The second card is the 9 of Cups, I picked it from the pile upright. Grabbing the card upright or down has different meanings. I – luckily – picked the card upright, which is the better version of the two. Below I will describe the meaning that I have found on the web.

The Goddess Pose, I figured this was the perfect pose to my ‘asana a day’ section of the website. I want to focus on an asana pose, and get deeper knowledge of the pose and figure out how I, and you, can do it right!

– opens the hips, groin and chest as well as strengthen core
– strengthens the legs: quadriceps and inner thigh muscles
– strengthens upper body: shoulders, arms and upper back
– stimulates groin: the uro-genital system and pelvic floor
– heats the body and increases circulation

1. Stand in mountain pose (tadasana)
2. Separate feet wide, about the length of one of your legs and turn your toes out and heels in so your feet are at a 45 degree angle
3. Bend your knees deeply, try to keep your knees above your ankles to protect them from injury. Sink your hips down to the height of your knees (if possible)
4. Raise your arms at shoulder height and bend your elbows to a 90 degree angle
5. Engage your udiyana bandha (stomach lock) by engaging your core muscles and draw the tailbone down in the direction of the floor. Keep shoulders straight, spine long and keep engaging your muscles.

Watch your knees, your knees are so sensitive, so keep your knees straight above your ankles.

Remember that it’s all about getting into the pose, take your time and then remain here for about five breaths.
